Video: How to Tie Matt's Monster Bugger

Monster Bugger
Last week, we posted an article by Tom Rosenbauer. about fishing big streamers during the high, cold water of early spring. In his discussion on choosing patterns, Tom argued that "flies that have some movement of their own, like ones with marabou and rabbit fur, work best under these conditions. Flies with brass (or even better tungsten) beads get the fly deeper in a hurry." His list of his favorite seven streamers for the early season features many such bulky, wiggly creations. Matt's Monster Bugger could very easily be on that list, with its marabou tail, flashy body, waving rubber legs, and serious weight.

In this great video from Tightline Productions, tier Matt Grobert offers a lesson on tying this monstrosity. As you'll see, the only tricky part is controlling the rubber legs, but the video offers a couple tricks for taming the wild material. I also like the way he trims the marabou tail with just his thumbnail. Tie up a bunch of these over the next month or two, and let us know if you catch any trout worthy of this fly's name.
